Great idea!

This was (yet another) timely read for me. Being the new year and all, I've been wrestling with what I can do to make my daily routine more suited to my needs; what works, what doesn't, what's missing, etc.

Just this morning I was writing about whether I was making things too difficult for myself by trying to cram too many things in all at once. I really like the idea of treating all of these separate things as classes, moving from one to the next as if at school.

I'll have to think on this a bit more, and see if a similar process might work for me. Thanks!

What would happen to all of us if we HAD TO take a 5-10 minute walk between every transition of our days?

Oh, you’re showered and dressed? Go for a fifteen minute walk before you can go to your kitchen to make breakfast and coffee.

Oh. You made breakfast and ate it?

Take a ten minute walk before you go into the next room to make your first collage of the day.

Oh, you made a collage/small art? Time to walk again before you journal/read/open emails.

I’m happier and thinner and more mentally relaxed just READING this possible schedule. Duuuuude. Is multiple daily mini walks the magic key to the best art-making-year EVER?

Yeah, you are onto it! When I am thinking about it as college, going from class to class in 10 minutes or whatever, I realized that the 10 minutes is just what you do no matter the weather or conditions, the prof is going to mark you absent if you are not there more or less on time. So you just do it. Hence, to go out and walk multiple times a day I am noticing is easy to do and enjoyable and gets you blood circulating and actually, from scheduling the activities, I notice I am more focused to get tasks accomplished because class will be over soon punctuated by the short walk. Then while walking you have a few minutes to mentally prepare and plan out your next activity. So I am starting to think this is a smart idea. If you set it up like classes, you can plan out your schedule by the week and then stick to it for several months at a time like a semester. That helps to focus your planning and goals to happen in a 3-4 month span instead of a year.

So I have been doing this all week and I went from about 4,000 steps from a single longer walk a day to 10,000 steps doing all of these short walks all day. Which is the supposed recommended amount of walking. That is not a magic number but the more you walk the heathier your heart and hence general health. I looked it up and the population's average steps in NYC or in Paris is 7,500 steps which are among the biggest walking urban cultures around apparently. Once you schedule it is easy to do.

In a couple of weeks I’ll report on what I think about this idea in practice. Once I have mastered the schedule. Today I got in 9,500 steps. I have been figuring out the schedule that works for me and setting up my spaces and materials and I am going to try to start it hard core on monday the 29th.

I don't know if you have been keeping up with my son Zach but he is in the middle of a 90 day program he calls the Change You Challenge. So I was inspired by that idea of his but bent to my own lifestyle and purposes.
