Paint Chip Collages | 2009

Fusion Series #2766 - 2007 - collage on paper - 9x6 inches

I spent a number of years as a young man as a house painter and painting contractor. As an artist this seemed like a good way to keep a brush in my hand. Also, as a contractor, there was the ability to work your own schedule so that all the best hours of the day – for me, early morning-  could be spent in the studio and you could put gaps between jobs to give yourself a few days here and there to work in the studio full time.
While painting walls instead of canvas, there is still a concern for color and paint chips were ever present. In these collages I used cards of color from the paint store. I would often collect these color samples and bring them back to the studio and study various color relationships.
Collage artists are avid collectors of paper items and when you can get your materials for free, all the better.
